NEWS AND
COMMENTS
n Professor Berislav
Borčić died
At the end of
October (27.10.2004.) died professor Berislav Borčić jr. one of the milestones
of Croatian epidemiology. He had devoted all his life to a noble goal of
improving health of all Croatian citizens, working as a chief epidemiologist and
head of the Epidemiology department of the Croatian national institute of public
health, being also for several years a director of the same Institute. This
target was really splendidly accomplished, owing to his long year systematic
work on the creation of national mass vaccination schedule and its realization,
his scientific researches in the field of natural focus zoonoses like tularemia,
hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, leptospirosis and tick born
meningencephalitis as well as his epidemiological work on endemic nephropathy,
influenza, measles etc. Beside that, he greatly contributed to the development
and high level of organization of entire national epidemiology service network.
This all undoubtedly made the health of our people
better.
Dr. Berislav Borčić
was a long year professor of epidemiology at the Zagreb Medical school of the
University of Zagreb. He was one of founders of the Croatian epidemiological
society of the Croatian Medical association in 1975, and also its honorable president between
1985 and 1988.
Here are some
details from his curriculum. Born on 16.12. 1932 in Zagreb, but very soon
traveling and spending few years in China, along with his father, dr. Berislav
Borčić senior, a high officer of the World Health Organization and a close
collaborative of Prof. Andrija Štampar the first president of the World health
assembly. Afterwards he attended the international high school in Geneva
Switzerland. He studied medicine in Geneva and in Zagreb, where he graduated in
1959. There he earned his doctor scientiae title with thesis Tularemia in its
natural foci in Croatia. He worked as an epidemiologist whole professional life
in the Croatian national institute of public health, being retired for only a
year. Profesor Borčić had collaborated as an expert in several international
scientific bodies especially in the WHO Expanded program on immunization - EPI
project, as a head of this program in Croatia. Beside all other successes of
national mass vaccination program he had been developing through more than
twenty years (diphtheria, measles, rubella, mumps, pertussis etc.) he recently
could witnessed also a great day of official confirmation of eradication of
poliomyelitis in Croatia, receiving for this accomplishment a special WHO
diploma. As a Geneva pupil, doctor Borčić became an excellent French language
speaker, later being for many years a member of the ADELF (Association Des
Epidemiologistes de Langue Francaise) i.e. the international French speaking
epidemiologist association. He was also a distinguished member of the Croatian
medical academy.
He left to as more
than 120 scientific papers, published in many national and international
journals and also several books, among them the "Epidemiology of communicable
diseases" in two editions (1998 and 2000) and an exceptionally ingenious chapter
on Epidemiology of leptospirosis as an natural focus disease in the prof. Ivan Zaharia
interdisciplinary monography the
Leptospiroses.
n Cancer in Croatia 2002.
Recently a new year-book of the Cancer registry of the Epidemiology
service of the Croatian national institute of public health was published,
containing cancer data for Croatia for the year 2002. Here we are excerpting
