Health examination for third-country nationals subject

Health examination for third-country nationals subject to a visa regime before extending a residence permit is required pursuant to the Ordinance on the Residence of Third-Country Nationals in the Republic of Croatia. The scope of the examination is determined by a Decision of the Minister of Health, based on the Act on the Protection of the Population from Communicable Diseases.

The mandatory health examination includes collecting medical history through an interview and review of medical documentation; physical examination; chest X-ray; stool analysis for communicable disease pathogens, and blood tests for the presence of certain infections.

The examinations are carried out at county institutes of public health. Employees holding a temporary residence permit must be referred by their employer to attend the health examination at the appropriate public health institute according to their area of residence.

The employer is responsible for issuing the referral form to the employee and scheduling the examination with the appropriate institute of public health via telephone or email.

The employer bears the cost of the examination based on the invoice issued by the Institute after the foreign worker has been examined.

Standard examination includes physical examination, chest X-ray with interpretation of the X-ray image, stool analysis for Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi, blood sample collection for testing markers of blood-borne communicable diseases, and catch-up vaccination, if necessary. Persons who have findings from previous recent examinations (e.g., a recent chest X-ray) should bring them to the appointment in order to avoid repeated testing.

Within a few days after the examination, and based on the test results, the person will receive a Certificate of Completed Health Examination, including recommendation for any additional medical evaluation, if necessary and a catch-up vaccination plan, if required.

The referral form for employees sent by their employer for the examination, as well as instructions on how to prepare for the health examination, can be downloaded from the documents listed below.

Examinations at the Croatian Institute of Public Health are carried out by the Division for Epidemiology of Communicable Diseases at the address Rockefellerova 2 (2nd Floor), 10000 Zagreb, Croatia.
