Newly diagnosed cancer cases and cancer deaths in 2009

There were 21,199 newly diagnosed cancer cases (ICD‑10 codes C00-C97, excluding skin cancer, C44) 11,483 males and 9,716 females. The incidence rate was of 477.7/100,000; 537.6/100,000 for males and 422.1/100,000 for females. The male to female ratio was 54:46.

In 2009, there were 13,315 cancer deaths (7,729 males and 5,586 females). Total cancer mortality rate was 300.1/100,000 (361.9/100,000 for males and 242.7/100,000 for females). The male to female ratio of 58:42 reflects continued high case-fatality rate of trachea, bronchus and lungs cancer, the leading cancer site in males.
