Newly diagnosed cancer cases and cancer deaths in 2010

There were 20,887 newly diagnosed cancer cases (ICD‑10 codes C00-C97, excluding skin cancer, C44) 11,203 males and 9,684 females. The incidence rate was of 472.8/100,000; 525.5/100,000 for males and 423.6/100,000 for females.

In 2010, there were 13,482 cancer deaths (7,751 males and 5,731 females). Total cancer mortality rate was 305.2/100,000 (363.6/100,000 for males and 250.7/100,000 for females).

Most common cancer sites in 2010

The five most common cancer sites making up 57% of new male cancer cases involved the trachea, bronchus and lungs (18%), prostate (16%), colon (9%), rectum, rectosigmoid and anus (7%) and urinary bladder (7%). In females, the five most common cancer sites, namely the breast (26%), colon (8%), trachea, bronchus and lungs (7%), uterine body (7%) and ovary, fallopian tube and adnexa (5%), accounted for 53% of new cancer cases in females.

Combined, colon, rectum, rectosigmoid and anal cancers represented 16% of the male and 13% of the female cancer incidence.
